Message Stamp
Version 1.01
Program Name: MsgStamp.EXE
Distribution: Bundled with the RBBS Turbo Message Base Packer (RTMBP)
Registration: None (FREE)
Purpose : To enter Canned or User definable messages into RBBS-PC message
base Node records.
Author : Walter C. Ames
Preface:
This program was designed to change the message displayed to users when
the W)ho's on feature of RBBS is invoked. Currently RBBS displays
"Waiting for next caller" (If you are NOT the SysOp). With this utility
you can change that message to 1 of 4 canned messages or if the canned
messages don't meet your needs you can enter a user defined message.
There are several reasons why you may want to use this utility.
1. Let your users know why the other line(s) of you BBS are busy.
2. Let remote Sysop's know if the BBS is performing it's events.
3. Explain the possible slowdown in your system due to heavy Maintenance.
4. Etc.
Usage:
Message Stamp is parameter driven. It will accept a minimum of 3 parameters
and a maximum of 5 (Counting the User definable string as 1). These parms
must be in a specific order.
Parm 1: <MsgBase> <Mandatory>
This is the filename of the message base that you would like to
stamp. RBBS only looks at the Main Message base for this info
so stamping any other base will do no good.
Parm 2: <nn> <Mandatory>
This is the Number of the Node you wish to stamp. Acceptable
numbers are 1 to 36. (RBBS-PC currently only supports 36 Nodes)
Parm 3: <xx> <Mandatory>
This is the Number of the Message you would like to use in the
stamping process. There are 4 canned message, 1 designed to
clear the Node record, 1 user definable message, and 1 designed
to simply set a specific Node Record as ACTIVE.
Parm 4&5: <Optional>
Due to the nature of the 4th/5th parameter it will require more
explanation.
Parameter 4 can come in the form of a user definable message or
an RBBS active node flag override switch. If in Parm 3 you
selected message 6 (user definable) then you would type that
message here. If you chose any other message ie. 1-5 and
needed to override RBBS-PC's Active Node flag then you would
enter and '*' here (minus the quotes).
If in Parm 3 you selected message 6 then the override switch
would come in the form of Parm 5.
Q. Why would I want to Override RBBS's Active Node Flag?
A. Due to the way RBBS does things MsgStamp will NOT stamp
a Node record that has an Active flag (denoting that a
user is currently online) but in order for your users
to see the messages applied by MsgStamp it is necessary
to toggle the Active flag. Therefore if a user is online
and you run MsgStamp on that node, MsgStamp will simply
issue an error message on the local terminal. If by chance
you wish to clear the message and node record after using
MsgStamp and setting the flag Active you can use this switch
to do just that. (Are you still following me?)
The Command line Syntax for MsgStamp is as follows:
C:\> MSGSTAMP <MsgBase> nn xx <Optional Message> ss <Return>
The following Canned Messages are available:
1 = Processing RelayNet Mail
2 = Processing FIDO-Netmail
3 = Preforming Maintenance
4 = Local Node for SysOp Only
5 = Blanks Out that Record and sets ActiveFlag to Inactive*
6 = User Entered Message 31 Chars Max*
7 = Sets a Node record ACTIVE with current contents left intact
* Message 5 and 6 have a special purpose.
Message 5 is designed to clear the Node record and set the node back
to an Inactive status. This will cause RBBS to display the STOCK
message "Waiting for next caller"
Message 6 is designed to add flexibility to the program. If Msg 6 is
selected you can type in anything you would like to have appear in the
W)hos on field. This field is restricted by RBBS to 31 characters.
You may type in as many characters as the DOS command line will hold
but MsgStamp will only respect the first 31. This is due to the fact
that I am sure you don't want me to corrupt your message base.
Use this program in good health.
